The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) is committed to supporting British citizens and their interests wherever they are in the world. With our work taking us to every continent and into every imaginable scenario, our expertise is called on to assist with a wide array of challenges such as helping tourists find a safe way home after natural disasters, handling terrorism situations and generating opportunities that will benefit British people and businesses. At the heart of this work is a worldwide network of 270 diplomatic offices and 14,000 dedicated employees. Working collaboratively to create forward-thinking results, this geographically-spread team need to know that they can live and work in a safe environment, and it is here that we need your guidance.
We currently have a number of deeply interesting opportunities to take up positions overseas. The country you are posted in will be dependent on your experience and skillset, with each role offering the chance to implement high-quality security strategies that will ensure the safety of staff, information and equipment. Advising senior management and colleagues on all elements of security, your remit will extend from workplaces to staff residential properties, seeing to it that threats are being addressed and that emergency drills are being instituted and constantly reviewed. If your post has a regional aspect to the role, you will also maintain regular contact with regional posts. Line managing local guard forces, and in some countries a Post Security Manager too, you will liaise with personal security teams, police forces, airport security and other key security personnel to share knowledge. Whether investigating incidents, completing travel-risk assessments, testing emergency communications, assessing rapid deployment teams or planning for special events, this is a multi-layered role that will provide you with broad array of day-to-day activities.
To excel in this fast-paced opportunity, you will need an understanding of security practices, ideally gained in a security management role. Alternatively, you might have a background in the military, police or prison service. Crucially, you will have excellent people, partnership and communication skills, with the capacity to influence others and make effective decisions. With experience of managing large groups of people and protecting both people and premises, you will have a full UK driving license, or be willing to attain one before you take up your post. You will also meet the minimum medical fitness requirements.
There is huge scope to extend your skills and knowledge when you join the FCO. With ongoing training and development opportunities – such as the Security in Fragile Environments Course (SAFE+) – we will ensure you are equipped to handle every situation that you are presented with. Complemented by a competitive benefits package, this is a valuable opportunity to do something truly unique with your career.
